we are setting as we wind down two wars, to rebuild america, and we reduce our deficit in a balanced way that allows us to make these critical investments. ultimately it's up to the voters, to you, which path we should take. are we going to double down on the top-down economic policies that help us get into this mess, or do we embrace america doing best when the middle-class. >> of trichet the chance to be here with the president and be at the university of denver -- i appreciate the chance to be here with the president. congratulations to you, mr. president, under anniversary. i am sure this is the most romantic place you can imagine being, here with me. i have had the occasion of the last couple of years in meeting people across the country. i was in dayton, ohio, and a woman grabbed my arm and said i have been out of work since may, can you help me? yesterday i was at a rally in denver and a woman came up to be with the baby in her arms and said my husband has had four jobs in three years. he lost his most recent job and we have now just lost our home, can you help us? the answer

'll have to close our deficit. and how do we deal with our tax code and make sure we are reducing spending in a responsible way and how do we make sure we have enough revenue to make those changes. governor romney's plan calls for $8 trillion, how we pay for that reduce the deficit and make the investments that we need to make without dumping those costs on middle class americans i think is one of the central questions of this campaign. >> both of you have spoken about a lot of different things. first governor romney do you have a question you would like to ask the president directly about something he just said? >> romney: sure. first of all, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i don't have a tax cut. my view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class, but i'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high income people. they are doing just fine in this economy. the people having a hard time right now are middle income americans. they have been buried. they are just being crushed. middle income americans have seen their income c

of the fed. certainly fed jim bernanke and a big hawk about our deficit. good to have you on the program. >> thank you, maria. good to be with you. >> what are you expecting? do you think governor romney comes out swinging right off the bat? what do you think he is going to be pressured and asked about in terms of specifics on his economic plan? >> overall i don't expect a whole lot of specifics from either one. in the last several weeks the whole of the discussion has been on debate techniques and who's going to make the biggest gaffe. hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it. but i don't know if they'll get around to what i consider the biggest financial issues, the debt crisis that we have. and what are they going to do about it. and how do they relate to the federal reserve. say we can't have much to do with it. let the fed monetize the debt and go on and on? i have not heard from either one of them actually cutting something. so i'm afraid the important issue of the financial crisis that we're in the middle of is going to get worse. my prediction is they won't really deal with it t

president four years. you said you would cut the deficit in half. we still have trillion dollar deficits. >> five weeks before the election, he says his big bold idea is, never mind. >> if there is any good news for the president after the debate is that the unemployment rate dropped below 8% from 8.1%, to 7.8%, the lowest since he took office. jonathan martin was on the ground for the debate in denver. you say romney took the debate stage with the top republican verging on panic. did this turnaround for them? >> they are backing away from the edge. there is no question that this was a make or break moment for governor romney. if he had not shown up like he did in denver, you would have seen a really ugly scene here. a lot of folks in his party would have backed away from him. this puts him back in the game, it restores confidence among other people running for the house and senate this year who are now happy to be seen with him. it gives them a real boost when they desperately need it. he still has problems and a lot of swing states. this puts them back in the game, it turns around the

to handle the economy, mr. romney leads by three. on the deficit, mr. romney leads by nine. on all of these issues, that's the one on which he has the strongest trust from voters as compared with president obama. and that confidence in mr. romney on the deficit turns up not just in the nbc/"wall street journal" poll, but in a lot of national polls. even though he hasn't given a lot of details as to how he would handle the deficit as an issue. the bottom line, there's no question as to who you would rather be here, right? you would rather be president obama than mitt romney looking at these numbers. that plus 19 advantage that the president has on looking out for the middle class, that is a death nail for mr. romney's campaign if he cannot turn that around. but i think looking ahead to tonight's debate, there is a real opportunity in the huge disconnect in the electorate, in a way that reflects a real risk for president obama. there's this huge disconnect between mr. obama's best number with voters and one of his worst numbers. which is that president obama has so far not been able

on the economy and jobs. >> as you said, the focus clearly on the economy from jobs to taxes to the deficit. mitt romney went on the attack early among other things on what he planned to cut. >> obama care is on my list, apologize mr. president. >> i like -- >> good. i'm sorry, jim, i will stop the subsidy to pbs. i like pbs. i like big bird. i will not keep borrowing money. >> president obama responded by questioning pledge to cut taxes for all and reducing the deficit at the same time. >> math, common sense and our history shows us that's not a recipe for job growth. we've tried this. we've tried both approaches. the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that's made in 2001-2003. >> the national federation of independent businesseses said your plan will kill 700,000 jobs. i don't want to kill jobs in this environment. >> romney slammed the president for the collapse of sill cylinderra and among things. 46% of america he considered himself -- themselves victims. even president supporters frustrated he didn't go on the owe -- offensive. >> we have crews with both

as we wind down two wars to rebuild america, and that we reduce our deficit in a way that makes us ablet -- that makes it able for us to create critical investments. it is up to you. are we going to go from the top down, which is what got us into this mess, or do we embrace the new economic patriotism that says america does best when the middle class does best? i'm looking forward to having that debate. >> governor romney. >> thank you, jim. i appreciate the chance to be with the president. appreciate the university of denver and their welcome. congratulations to you, mr. president, on your anniversary. i am sure this is the most dramatic place you could imagine, here with me. so congratulations. [laughter] this is a tender topic. i have had the occasion over the last several years meeting people across the country. i was in ohio and a woman grabbed my arm, and she said, i have been out of work since may. can you help me? yesterday was a rally in denver. a woman came up to my wife with a baby in her arms and said, my husband has had four part-time jobs in three years. we have just lost o

that, sometimes debates have. but there was an exchange about the deficit and debt, talking about the simpson-bowles plan, that had an interesting back and forth. take a listen. e >> in one year, you provided $90 billion in breaks to the green energy world. now, i like green energy as well, but that's about 50 years worth of what oil & gas receives, exon and mobile this. $2.8 billion goes largely to small company, drilling operators and so forth. but if we get that tax rate down to 25%, that $2 important 8 billion is on the table. that's probably not going to survive. but don't forget, you put $ninety billion, like 50 years worth of breaks into soular and wind, to solyndra, fisker, i have a friend who said, you don't just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers. >> he was talking about the energy plan. president obama picking losers. we will get the simpson-bowles one. let's bring in the panel for analysis. brit hume and joe trippi. okay, brit. your thoughts? >> well, you are right, governor romney came out. he was aggressive. when do you that, you are always in danger

in this election this year is obviously the deficit. everyone has talked about the deficit. let's play with both of these candidates tonight had to say about what they would do as president when it comes to the nation's deficit and debt. >> you have been president four years. you said you would cut the deficit in half. we still have trillion dollar deficits. each of the next four years. if you are reelected, we'll get to a trillion dollar debt. >> if we are asking for no revenue, we have to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff and the magnitude of tax cuts would end up resulting in severe hardship for people. more importantly, would not help us grow. >> george ray ray reynalds. what was being missed here? >> sounds good. we've heard it before and it hasn't been happening. that's really it in a nutshell. a lot of good ideas. i really would pick and choose. romney has the means for cutting expenses. that's a good idea. although they both seemed a little unclear at times as to what the difference was between the deficit and the debt. we got the tax part of the equation. obama sited earlier when

say mitt romney's tax plan adds 5 trillion. about i say i will not add to the deficit with my tax plan. >> romney never actually said there would be a 20% tax cut? >> i'm going to lower rates across the board for all americans by 20%. i want a 20% across the board reduction in taxes. the individual marginal tax rate 20% across the board. the top rate, for instance, would go from 35 to 28, middle rates would come down by 20% as well, all rates come down. >> president obama was just as surprised. >> well, for 18 months he's been running on this tax plan. and now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big, bold idea is never mind. >> but the etch a sketching did not stop there. governor romney who once believed financial regulation was hurting the economy -- >> dodd frank it's called, has not helped enterprise get going, it's slowed it down. >> now seems to be a supporter of wall street regulation. >> want to repeal dodd/frank? >> and replace it. we're not going to get rid of regulation. some parts of dodd/frank that make all of the sense in the world. >> and back in june,

and deficit reduction. >> woodruff: then, we turn to the war in syria, as skirmishes spill over the border with turkey for a second day in a row. >> brown: we come back to last night's debate with two takes on how it was received. ray suarez talked to voters in the swing state of florida. >> i didn't hear what i need to about jobs. that is the number one interest of generally everyone in the united states. >> woodruff: and in our regular "daily download" segment, margaret warner explores how the face off played in social media. >> brown: and it hasn't happened in baseball in 45 years. we look at 'triple crown' winner miguel cabrera of the detroit tigers. that's all ahead on tonight's "newshour." major funding for the pbs newshour has been provided by: and by the alfred p. sloan foundation. supporting science, technology, and improved economic performance and financial literacy in the 21st century. and with the ongoing support of these institutions and foundations. and... this program was made possible by the corporation for public broadcasting. and by contributions to your pbs station from

. >> another hot topic, the deficit. >> it's now four years later, we still have trillion dollar defici deficits. >> $2.50 for every cut, we ask for a dollar of additional revenue paid for as i indicated earlier by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> there were also some notable exchanges about jobs, health care, energy industry subsidies and regulation, all of these things got deeper than some people had been expecting. we'll talk about those topics with john harwood. but if you were watching, as they headed in a 70% -- >> down from 80 the day before. >> right now it's down to about 66% in trade obviously suggesting romney got a big boost. >> mini flash crash. >> among our political guests this morning ready to talk about the road to election today, arianna huffington will be our guest host. huffington "post" obviously has a left bent, but it was declaring romney won the debate. ken duberstein will join us, as well. >> i was reading some of your tweets last night, john, and i liked your tweet. i tell you w

this country forward and he did that tonight. and i think he scored point on balanced deficit reduction plan and how he would do it. holding wall street accountable and how he would do it. health reform plan, and i think that mitt romney, yes, he absolutely wins the preparation. he wins the style points. that's not what is dogging his campaign. what is dogging his campaign, the policies he doubled down on tonight. let's talk about the tax cuts. he signalled over the last couple of days, details about how they would pay for it they didn't put out details, they backed away from it. they are not being honest with the american people. you know what's worse? he got testy about it, being on defense and i think that came across to the american people. >> the president seemed to get testy at one point when he was interrupted by jim lehrer. will the president do more debate prep before the next debate, prepare differently. do you think he didn't take this seriously enough? >> we feel good about the president's performance here tonight. he wasn't speaking to the people in the room, the pundit class, b

the deficit in half, we still have trillion dollars deficits, a we will be have a trillion-dollar deficit each of the four years if you are reelected we will get to a $20 trillion debt. >> rose: it will be seen if romney can keep up the momentum. we begin this evening with analysis of chris matthews of msnbc, welcome. >> thank you, charlie. >> rose: as you watched the debate last night, what was your reaction to what you were seeing, b, why do you think it was that way, and, c, where are we going from here? >> well, i think governor romney knew it would be a wide open format and he came in to take charge. he was a commanding presence and i feel for the president because i don't think anyone has ever had to go up against a person who just sort of took the stage as if it didn't need anyone on the stage, including the monitor and once that began, i don't know whether he could change that environment what i was frustrated is failure to use the synapse to pop out and sitting here talking you and ji jim lehr about the pbs funding which is okay and cute and fun to talk about, how about the auto indus

creating jobs in the united states or closing the deficit in a responsible, balanced way that allows us to invest in our future, all of those things are designed make sure that the american people, their genius, their grit, their determination... is channeled and they have an opportunity to succeed. everybody's getting a fair shot. everybody's getting a fair share and playing by the same rules. you know, four years ago, i said that i am not a perfect man and i wouldn't be a perfect president. that's probably a promise that governor romney thinks i've kept. but i also promised that i would fight every single day on behalf of the american people, and the middle class and all of those who striving to get in the middle class. i have kept that promise. if you will vote for me, then i promise i will fight just as hard in a second term. >> jim: governor romney. >> thank you, jim. mr. president. thank you for tuning in this evening. thanksgiving an important election. i am concerned about america. i am concerned about the direction america has been taking over the last four years. i -- i know t

for that revenue, and if you don't close $4.8 trillion in those loopholes, two things happen, either the deficit goes up, or more likely is the middle class is going to see their taxes go up. >> but he's saying, as you know, robert, he's stating unequivocally that he will not push the tax cuts if they increase the deficit and that he will not push them if they force back increases on the middle class. >> well, then he has -- then he's got no economic theory. then he's walked away from 18 months of what the whole campaign has been about. but, george, we've seen this movie before where people say, oh, don't worry. it's all going to get paid for. it's fine. when you ask him what loopholes will you close specifically for wealthy earners to help pay for the $4.8 trillion in reduced revenue, there's no answer. i mean, let's be clear. paul ryan a week ago was asked about the math for this, and paul ryan, said, look, the math takes too long. well, mitt romney's solution is he just decided there wasn't math involved in this problem, and that's absolutely crazy. look, the only thing he outlined that he wo

. >> the governor aides say -- the obama camp will focus on the economy, taxes and the deficit and will hit romney hard on the idea that bill clinton has been making and made at the democratic national convention in charlotte, north carolina, it does not add up when you look at the romney campaign. >> he will say he will cut the deficit. please! he wants $2 trillion in new defense spending that the pentagon did not ask for and he will not saw how he will pay for the tax cut for the wealthy. >>reporter: president obama said he would cut the deficit in half this four years. that has not happened. he is vulnerable on a lot of the key issues. that will be a big part of this face off tonight. >>shepard: thank you, ed henry. as governor romney finishes the debate preparations in the city they are hitting his opponent over the comments from vice president biden. the romney camp calling the remarks about the middle class a stunning admission much he is a spokesman early here on fox news. >> we cannot afford four more years like the last four years we have seen under this president. his own vice president

that adds to the deficit. i want to underline that. virtually everything you said about my tax plan is inaccurate. so if the tax plan he described were a tax plan i was asked to support, i'd say absolutely not. i'm not looking for 5i trillion tax cut. i won't put in a place a tax cut that adds to the deficit. i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. that's not my plan. >> that's three different moments during this debate when mitt romney noticed the bump in the set for obama. what he's saying there is he's arguing against math. the idea that you can cut faxes 20%, can you tell taxes for everybody and it's deficit neutral and faye for it by closing unspecified loop moles and dealing with deductions. that is the romney position. it's up to bahama to make romney get specific about it to say okay. it's easy to say you deal with the deductions and it's easy to say it's deficit neutral and let's talk about the specific deductions and talk about the home interest deduction and health care deduction and the charitable giving deduction. these are things that people rely on and things that

either raising the deficit or burdening the middle class. it is math. >> mitt romney challenged obama's assertion that his tax plan would cost the country $five trillion in revenue, the knowledge to cut spending on government programs will drastically increasing funding for the military. in a jab that quickly exploded on twitter car romney told moderator jim lehrer he would cut funds to employer pbs, despite his love for certain sesame street character. >> i am sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs. i love big bird. i like you, too, but i am not one keep spending money on things to borrow money from china to pay for. >> we will expand the debate with third-party candidates after the headlines. turkey has launched strikes inside syria after a bomb fired from syrian territory killed five turkish civilians. the victims were a family of five and a village near the syrian border. the turkish deputy prime minister said his government had every right to respond with force. >> there has been in attack and citizens have lost their lives. there is definite response to international l

to the deficit. then romney said hey, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. cnn's tom foreman is here. what's up with that, tom? >> there were more accusations and denials than a junior high school schoolyard fight. we knew it would be a big issue. it dominated the beginning of this debate. obama said that romney is pitching a huge tax cut for the wealthy. >> governor romney's central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut. on top of the extension of the bush tax cuts, that's another trillion dollars and $2 trillion in additional military spending that the military hasn't asked for. >> awful lot, but let's look at the facts. mitt romney does propose a 20% tax cut. the nonpartisan tax policy center says that under that plan, if that's all you're talking about, is the tax cut, taxes on the wealthiest americans would be reduced by $5 trillion initially. our verdict here on this claim is that it is false. to understand why, you have to look at the the second part of the equation here. mitt romney, his idea that he would cut taxes on the wealthy by $5 trillion, we're saying that is false. the

cannot pay for his $5 trillion tax plan without blowing up the deficit or sticking it to the middle class. we can't afford to go down that road again. we can't afford another round of budget busting tax cuts for the wealthy. we can't afford to gut our stmes in education or n energy or research or technology. we can't afford to roll back regulations on wall street banks or oil companies or insuran comp we can't afford doubl down on the same topdown economic policies that t u intothis mess. that is not a jobs plan. it's not a plan for our ecomy. it's not a plan to strengthened middle cls. it is not change. it is a relapse. and we're not going to do it. we haveeen th we have tried that. we are not going back. moving forward. beuse i' got a different view. we have a different view about how to .[createbs and prosperi. this country doesn't succeed when only the rich get richer. we succeed when everybody has a shot, when the middle classs getting biggerwhen there are ladders of opportunity into the middle class. our economy does not grow from the top down, it grows from the middle out. that's

gave him higher marks saying he can bring back our economy, create jobs, solve the deficit problem across the array of economic issues, mitt romney had the upper hand. now he doesn't. what happened? >> the polling suggests the only issue where mitt romney is leading obama is who do you feel more positive about for the future, it is president obama. there are two things going on. the democrats had a very successful convention making the case that it was a much deeper problem that the country faced than anybody knew four years ago. most americans tend to believe that. secondly, president obama has come across as a little more likable on economic issues. when people are asked who would you rather sit next to on an airplane flight for four hours president obama wins by 25 points. >> eliot: go on air force i. >> it is not that big a gap in terms of likability, you're also going to have a strong gap in terms of who do you like in terms of understanding your issues and your pocketbook. >> eliot: let me ask youing the

promises. you know, $5 trillion in cuts but it won't add to the deficit, trust me i'll tell you later. eat cake, lose weight. so i don't think he got the game changer he needed tonight. i do think the president was particularly strong, though, in getting governor romney to admit that he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the president was good in drawing the contrast between the two economic approaches, the two economic plans. governor romney believes that tax cuts for the wealthy grow jobs. most of us understand that those sorts of tax cuts are what grow deficits. they don't grow jobs. and president obama and his opportunity economy, i thought that exchange was lucid. i don't think it was a game changer tonight. the president handled himself with a more dignified reserve. when governor romney was tested, he got kind of testy. and i thought that the president maintained his cool throughout and did well. >> what about the president's cool and the president's dignified reserve as you put it, do you think he's going to have to change that style going forward

. >> you have been president for four years. you said would you cut the deficit in half. it's now four years later. we still have trillion dollar deficits. >> reporter: mitt romney came into the debate trailing in the polls but that could change after last night's performance. >> anytime a challenger stands on the stage with the president in a first debate they tend to get a bounce. i expect that could happen here. >> reporter: the romney campaign believes the governor scored a knockout. >> i believe that governor romney was the clear winner of this debate. if it was a boxing match it would have been called. >> reporter: an instant cbs news poll chose romney the overwhelming winner. 46% of the people we surveyed said romney won the debate. but moderator and pbs anchor jim lehrer might not feel the same way. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop this subsidy to pbs. i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs. i love big bird. i actually like you, too. but i'm not going to keep on spending money for things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> reporter: they will square off again o

knows is not as good a position as it was when he took office. we have increased deficits. we have had unemployment over 8%. the middle class is hurting. and i think he did, thomas, give specifics. he gave his five-point plan how he is going to create jobs in this country. >> but senator, you don't think that we are better off than four years ago when it comes to 43 straight months of job growth, the fact that the auto bailout worked? the fact we have drawn out of the war in iraq and we are now slowly trying to map out the course to leave afghanistan? you don't think that the country is better off than we were four years ago as a whole, collectively? >> since you brought up the foreign situation, i think we are in a much worse position because the president withdrew from iraq and afghanistan without benchmarks that would be required to keep those countries stable when we leave. that's why we are seeing our people being shot by insiders in afghanistan. why things are breaking up in iraq. i don't think the world is safer because of what president obama has done. i think his foreign polic

that the military hasn't asked for. that's $8 trillion. how we pay for that, reduce the deficit and make the investments that we need to make without dumping those costs onto middle-class americans i think is one of the central questions of this campaign. >> under the president's policies, middle-income americans have been buried. they've just been crushed. middle-income americans have seen their income come down by $4,300. this is a tax in and of itself. i'll call it the economy tax. it's been crushing. at the same time, gasoline prices have doubled under the president. electric rates are up. food prices are up. health care costs have gone up by $2,500 a family. middle-income families are being crushed. and so the question is how to get them going again. >> a lot of this is just the visual and style of it, but also he was writing a lot. his head was down instead of engaging when you're debating, i have to say that mitt romney knew how to do that, how to get right in there and look right at him and go after. and then he was able to sort of gain control of the narrative, so to speak, beca
